Among the notable events affected was the Great American State Fair on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., which was temporarily closed as temperatures soared to 38 degrees Celsius. The National Park Service also announced the cancellation of the annual Independence Day Parade, initially scheduled for Saturday, due to projected heat index values reaching up to 115 degrees Fahrenheit.
Record-Breaking Temperatures and Power Strain
The heat wave, attributed to a high-pressure system known as a “heat dome,” has led to record-breaking temperatures across the eastern U.S. This extreme weather has placed immense strain on power grids, with PJM, the largest U.S. power grid operator, urging customers to conserve electricity to manage generator outages and increased demand for air conditioning.

As of Friday, over 185 million people—more than half of the U.S. population—were under heat alerts. Forecasters have warned that the heat wave poses serious health risks, urging individuals to stay hydrated and seek shade during outdoor activities.
