How to Reserve Your WhatsApp Username Ahead of the 2026 Launch

WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a new feature that allows users to reserve unique usernames ahead of its full launch in 2026. This initiative aims to enhance user privacy by enabling contact without revealing phone numbers.

Understanding WhatsApp Usernames

The upcoming username feature will serve as an optional identifier linked to a user’s account. Once activated, users can share their username instead of their phone number when connecting with new contacts. However, existing contacts will still see the phone number if they have it saved.

How to Reserve Your Username

Currently, the reservation option is available only through the WhatsApp mobile app, not on WhatsApp Web or desktop. To reserve a username, iPhone users should navigate to the ‘You’ section, select their profile, and choose ‘Create Username’ or ‘Reserve Username.’ Android users can access this feature through the Settings menu. It is important to keep the app updated to receive notifications about the availability of this feature.

Username Guidelines and Security Features

Each username must be unique and can range from three to 35 characters, including lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores. WhatsApp has also implemented security measures, such as an optional authorization key for users receiving messages through usernames, to prevent misuse and enhance privacy.

While the username feature is set to roll out gradually, the Indian government has requested a pause on its implementation in India until further details are provided, citing concerns over potential fraud and impersonation risks.

As the full launch approaches, users are encouraged to reserve their preferred usernames early to ensure they secure their desired identity across platforms.
