PTA Warns SIMs Linked to Expired CNICs May Be Blocked

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has reminded mobile phone users to keep their CNIC records updated, warning that SIMs connected to expired, cancelled, or invalid identity cards may stop working.

The advisory focuses on subscriber records that are no longer valid in the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) system. According to the regulator, mobile connections must remain attached to valid and verifiable CNICs to continue operating without disruption.

Why PTA Issued the Warning

PTA says users should renew their CNICs before expiry and update the renewed information with their mobile network operator as soon as the new card is issued. If the identity document linked to a SIM becomes inactive or invalid, the connection may become ineligible under telecom verification rules.

The reminder is especially important for subscribers who registered SIMs years ago and have since renewed, replaced, or changed their identity documents. Any mismatch between the operator’s subscriber record and NADRA’s current data can create service problems.

What Mobile Users Should Do

  • Check the expiry date printed on your CNIC.
  • Renew the CNIC through NADRA before it expires.
  • After renewal, update your CNIC details with your mobile network operator.
  • Make sure every SIM in your name is linked to a valid and verifiable identity record.

Users who ignore the update may face suspension or blocking of their mobile connections. PTA says only SIMs registered against valid CNICs will remain active.
