Impact of Monsoon Floods on People Living with HIV in Pakistan

As Pakistan braces for the monsoon season, individuals living with HIV are increasingly worried about the potential impact of flooding on their health and access to medication. The previous year’s devastating floods highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by this community, as many struggled to access life-saving antiretroviral treatments.

Challenges Faced During Floods

Last year, Khalid, a resident of Buner, and his family had to navigate neck-deep floodwaters to retrieve their HIV medication, prioritizing their health over other valuables. The floods, which affected Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, resulted in over a thousand fatalities and displaced millions. For those living with HIV, the disruption of access to treatment centers during such disasters poses severe health risks.

Rising HIV Incidence Amid Climate Disasters

Recent reports indicate a troubling increase in new HIV infections in Pakistan, with a 200% rise over the past 15 years. Unsafe medical practices have been identified as a significant factor contributing to this surge. As the monsoon season approaches, healthcare experts warn that the combination of climate-related disasters and the stigma surrounding HIV could exacerbate the health crisis.

Community Responses and Preparedness

In response to the challenges posed by flooding, the Association of People Living with HIV-Pakistan (APLHIV) activated an Emergency Response Cell to ensure that affected individuals receive uninterrupted treatment. The government has also initiated plans to enhance flood preparedness and improve screening for HIV in public hospitals. However, the long-term impact of climate change on health systems remains a critical concern.
