A devastating earthquake struck Indonesia’s Flores island, registering a magnitude of 7.7. The quake occurred early on Saturday, resulting in the tragic loss of 48 lives and injuring over 100 individuals. Following the earthquake, which was accompanied by at least 341 aftershocks, around 5,000 people were displaced. The national disaster agency, BNPB, reported that many areas experienced power outages and disrupted telecommunications, complicating rescue efforts. Emergency access roads remain blocked, hampering the delivery of essential supplies.

Residents in the affected areas are calling for immediate assistance. Umri, a local from Nangahale village, expressed the dire need for food, clean water, medicines, and diapers for children. Many survivors, including 55-year-old Nurhidayati, have taken refuge on hilltops, fearing aftershocks and recalling the trauma of a previous earthquake in 1992 that resulted in a tsunami and significant casualties.

The Indonesian government has mobilized resources to assist the affected population. BNPB head Suharyanto announced that five helicopters, several planes, and naval vessels are en route to deliver aid. The government has dispatched 50,000 aid packages, weighing a total of 275 tonnes, to support those in temporary shelters.
Additionally, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is preparing to provide further assistance. European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen has also offered support, stating that the EU is ready to deploy its Copernicus Earth observation satellites to aid in search and rescue efforts.

Public facilities, including 93 educational institutions and 36 health facilities, have also suffered significant damage. Emergency medical services are currently operating in makeshift conditions. For instance, a local hospital in Ruteng has been severely impacted, leading to the evacuation of patients to tents set up outside. In one instance, a woman underwent an emergency C-section in a converted storage room, highlighting the urgent need for medical facilities.
